Drivers Race to Promote Car Safety

Drivers of many skill levels will race against the clock on July 17 as the Glen Region Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) presents its Summer 2011 Autocross Solo Technical Driving Event.  Held at The Shops at Ithaca Mall from 8:00AM-4PM, drivers can race individually with most kinds of cars and go-carts in an enclosed pile-on course in the parking lot behind Target.  “It’s a great way to test how your car reacts at its limits,” explains Kyle Kubic, a chairperson of the Glen division of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).  “It’s not often you get to test the limits of your car legally.  In an emergency, you can be more confident about controlling your car.”

Registration starts at 8:00AM, with car inspections from 8:30-9:30 AM.  “We need to make sure the wheel bearings are tight, the tires are safe, the brakes work, the throttle is unobstructed, and there is nothing loose inside the car like floor mats,” Kubic explains.  Following inspection, there is a drivers’ meeting, a novice driver walk-through and racing, finishing up with prizes. 

The cost to participate is $30 for SCCA members and $45 for non-SCCA members, and all drivers must possess a currently valid automobile Driver’s license, or a valid automobile permit.  Licensed underage drivers and those racing with a permit must follow the restrictions of their license or permit as they would on a public road.  Lifted or 4X4 vehicles are not permitted to race.  Racing will take place rain or shine.  For more information visit the Glen SCCA website at www.glen-scca.org or the Mall website at www.TheShopsatIthacaMall.com, or call the Mall Customer Service at (607)257-5337.
