Drivers Race to Promote Car Safety

New and experienced drivers will race against the clock on May 1 as the Glen Region Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) presents its 2011 Autocross Solo Technical Driving Event.  Held at The Shops at Ithaca Mall from 8:00AM-4PM, drivers can race individually with most kinds of cars and go-carts in an enclosed pile-on course in the parking lot behind Target.  “[The] SCCA is where anyone from a beginner to a seasoned veteran can improve their driving skills and have a blast doing it,” says SCCA Event Chair Pat Scopelliti.  The community can benefit from the skills the drivers gain, as well as the drivers themselves. “Because of the focus on safety and car control, drivers who compete in Solo [Autocross racing] are better and safer drivers,” Scopelliti explains.  “They quickly acquire better car control skills which will help them on the road.” 

 Drivers will race one at a time through the pile-on course after undergoing a technical inspection and having a driver’s meeting. The risks to the participants are carefully taken into consideration with prevention in mind.  “Besides car control our other main focus is safety,” Scopelliti asserts.  “The only real danger is a catastrophic failure in the car, but even then the courses are designed with safety in mind.“  Registration starts at 8:00AM, with car inspections, a drivers’ meeting, a novice driver walk-through and racing to follow.  The cost to participate is $30 for SCCA members and $45 for non-SCCA members, and all drivers must possess a currently valid automobile Driver’s license, or a valid automobile permit.  Licensed underage drivers and those racing with a permit must follow the restrictions of their license or permit as they would on a public road.  Racing will take place rain or shine.
